Business Model Canvas, 2024

This day last week, we concluded what has been a very enjoyable few weeks of the annual Business Model Canvas competition in conjunction with the Creativity Innovation and Teamwork module at Munster Technological University.

Since September, the Student Enterprise team have been busy working with lecturers from over 30 first year cohorts across the MTU Bishopstown campus as well as Cork School of Music, equipping students with the tools, knowledge and inspiration needed to start their own businesses.

We have welcomed over 1,000 first year students over to the Rubicon Centre since, who have impressed us with a wide and diverse range of different ideas, all addressing unmet needs and desires either faced by students here on campus, or in their own lives. All teams demonstrated key understanding of the 9 building blocks of the BMC, as well as special consideration of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Aoife McInerney, New Frontiers Programme Manager, Gráinne Maunsell, Student Innovation and Enterprise Officer Kerry, and Mark O’Donovan-Wyatt, New Frontiers Phase 2 participant, had the very difficult decision of picking only two winners on final showcase day.

Each and every student displayed professionalism and passion in their delivery – many having prototypes to illustrate their concepts further – but the business ideas who came out on top were winners ‘MicroCapture’, an innovative accessory for microscopes to capture high quality imagery, as well as ‘Green Wheels’, a unique carpool idea that addresses the ‘Good Health and Wellbeing’ SDG.
