At the Intersection of Academic Excellence in Cyber Security and Industry-Focussed Innovation

This year, the Rubicon Centre opened its doors to 12 curious professionals in the cybersecurity area who will spend ten intensive months on the newly established Cyber Innovate programme.

The initiative, which was established with the help of Dr Donna O‘Shea, Chair of Cyber Security MTU, and Ms. Josette O’Mullane, Innovation and Enterprise manager at MTU, meets at the intersection of academic excellence in cybersecurity and practical, industry-focused innovation.

We reached out to Programme Director Ronan Coleman to get further detailed insights into how this hands-on initiative is transforming the cybersecurity landscape across Ireland-

“Cyber Innovate is a needs-led, full-time, entrepreneurship training programme built on MTU’s acclaimed research, innovation, entrepreneurship and academic training ecosystem. The programme allows students to fully dedicate themselves to their entrepreneurial journeys as it provides them with a tax-free scholarship worth €38,000, plus fees of €5770, over the 10-month duration.

Working in multidisciplinary teams, students will apply the innovation process, knowledge and skills that they have learned to identify and assess cybersecurity problems by immersing themselves in a number of real world environments which have been developed with industry partners.

They will then design numerous potential solutions for this problem, rank the solutions, prototype and test them and then select the solution they wish to pursue.

Finally, they will validate the commercial opportunity for the potential products and services that they have designed, develop an appropriate business model, plan for a start-up company and initiate the fund raising process.

The long term objective of the programme is to produce cybersecurity innovators and leaders who will found and lead high-potential start-ups and SMEs.”
