Entrepreneurs of the Future!
For our first post back, we are going to focus on an initiative that we run for First Year students in CIT, the ‘Business Model Canvas. When students enter first year, they take a compulsory module called the ‘CIT (Creativity, Innovation and Teamwork) module. The module provides students with real skills that they can apply throughout their college careers and beyond. During this module they are introduced to the concept of a ‘Business Model Canvas’. The Rubicon Centre developed this part of the programme and its aim is to promote entrepreneurial thinking in students. Over the past few weeks our Student Enterprise Interns have been hard at work presenting the concept to students across the Bishopstown, National Maritime College and Cork School of Music campuses.
Since September of this year the interns went to 32 different first year class groups and introduced them to the ‘Business Model Canvas (BMC)’. The BMC is a tool used by many entrepreneurs and business owners to strategically plan for a business’s current and future needs. Our student interns made a presentation on the concept and then held an in-class workshop on how to put theory into practise. Following from the workshop students will work together in their groups to come up with business ideas, choose one and complete their own Business Model Canvas on that business idea. At the end of November these students will then pitch their final business model to the Rubicon team.
Having the ability to think and act like an entrepreneur is a skill that will benefit these students as they progress throughout their respective courses and careers. We can’t wait to see the ideas that this year’s students come up with! The 2019 Business Model Canvas competition involves 1,200 students and who knows, maybe some of the First Years of 2019 may be situated here in Rubicon with their own business ventures in the future.
