CIT is seeking potential CEO’s and entrepreneurs to accelerate the creation of commercially viable and sustainable spin out companies. Working with their researchers who have developed cutting-edge technologies, CIT is looking to match these innovative solutions with individuals who possess commercial experience and expertise and can help bring these technologies to market.

Representing a win-win situation for both parties, on the one hand, experienced tech entrepreneurs and business executives are afforded the opportunity to be at the helm of spin out companies that are at the forefront of developments in their industry. On the other hand, technology focused researchers will have the opportunity to see the commercial potential of their research realised.

The ideal entrepreneurial candidate would have:

  • Experience in the technology start-up industry.
  • The capacity to personally invest in the venture.
  • The ability to identify and validate the true commercial opportunity of an early stage technology.
  • The ability to commit the necessary time required in the creation of a new company.
  • The ability to figure out and articulate product, strategy, business model and routes to market.
  • The ability to leverage industry contacts and networks.

In many cases, academic researchers lack the skills in sales, marketing, raising finance and experience of the mechanics that make a business work. CIT is addressing this deficit by inviting experienced entrepreneurs and business executives to capitalise on the exciting collection of applied research within the Institute.

There are several research centres within CIT developing such projects.  Examples that may be of interest to experienced entrepreneurs and business executives are:

nBlocks

nBlocks is an IoT development toolkit which provides customers both high quality plug & play hardware modules and a software platform to facilitate swift integration and configuration, whilst being able to also use existing platforms (e.g. Arduino) and providing access to the data on a fully functional test-bed. This project is currently on-going.

BOSCo – Battery Optimisation System Controller

BOSCO is a smart charge controller for battery electricity storage systems with/without renewables for several leading batteries and inverter types. This project has recently finished and a comprehensive commercial evaluation has been completed., the results of which are very promising.

STEP4 – Short Term Electricity Pricing Forecasting

STEP4 is a new algorithm, leveraging an innovative blend of machine learning and statistical techniques for predicting the near-term price of electricity. This project will finish in the coming months.

TOXOR

TOXOR is a biosensor which measures the cytotoxic effects of water and toxic chemicals towards relevant biological cells (fish cells) and therefore gives a more precise measure of the toxicity risk that such water poses to human and aquatic health. This project is currently on-going.
